*Challenge 20/20
Teams choose a global problem to work on and identify and propose local solutions using teleconferencing, chat rooms and web platforms. Applications are required in order to partner with another school internationally.
* My classes collaborated on an international project looking at the problem of Global Infectious Diseases during the 2013-2014 school year. They were partnered with two other schools, one in New Jersey and another in Western Cape, South Africa. Teachers regularly planned together via email, phone, regular mail, teleconferencing, listserves, and blogging. Students conferenced with others over the Internet using Skype. Students submitted final project ideas, research, and proposed solutions. This project will continue this year.

Connect All Schools
In an historic speech in Cairo, Egypt in June 2009, President Obama expressed his desire to "create a new online network, so a young person in Kansas can communicate instantly with a young person in Cairo.” Since then, the Secretary of State and Secretary of Education have both emphasized the importance of learning other languages, gaining a global competency and traveling to other countries. A number of organizations linking US schools with others around the world are coming together in a new "Connect All Schools" consortium to meet a very specific goal: to connect every school in the US with the world by 2016. This project relies on the support of teachers around the world. Many teachers are not aware of the many options for introducing students to global issues, world languages, online international interaction and physical exchanges. This website has a collection of stories of what schools are already doing. Teachers across Maine and the country can learn about specific examples and work with partner organizations to replicate successes.

Global Wisconsin
Designed to encourage school districts to develop programs focused on the importance of understanding cultural differences and issues, and the impact it will have on students' future success—Global Wisconsin makes the case that international education is both essential to students and easily integrated into current teaching practices. In addition to nine short documentaries, Global Wisconsin's Valuing International Education provides testimonials from education, business, and community leaders highlighting the growing need to engage the international community. This is a study in what could be possible within our own school systems. Students who participate in this program go to their local high schools for half the day and to the Global Wisconsin Program for the other half.
