rationale for global education
Global Education is a necessity for the 21st Century learner. Our world is increasingly interconnecting everyday. Our students no longer only compete domestically. Global education enables people to understand the links between their own lives and those of people throughout the world. It increases understanding of the economic, cultural, political and environmental influences which shape our lives. Global education helps students to develop the skills, attitudes and values which enable people to work together to bring about change and take control of their own lives. Global education works towards achieving a more just and sustainable world in which power and resources are more equitably shared. Global education involves learner-centered and culturally responsive teaching and learning practices using schools, communities and the world as the classroom.
"Contemporary societies are marked by new global trends—economic, cultural, technological, and environmental shifts that are part of a rapid and uneven wave of globalization. The growing global interdependence that characterizes our time calls for a generation of individuals who can engage in effective global problem solving and participate simultaneously in local, national, and global civic life. Put simply, preparing our students to participate fully in today’s and tomorrow’s world demands that we nurture their global competence." A few things to think about
2015 Human Development Report
This report, published by the United Nations, discusses the numerous factors that resulted in the rapid rise in human development in countries like China, India and Brazil. Over and over again, education is cited as being a deciding factor when it comes to lowering many contemporary global problems such as poverty, overpopulation, environmental degradation, and gender inequality. The report is also a study of the global interconnectedness of the present human condition. The report offers ideas for advancement of human development that includes the tapping of global markets, taking new global views of public goods, and balancing the global world. Making content more relevant to contemporary life and global challenges is key. In the words of the UN's Global Education First Initiative, "We must rethink the purpose of education to prepare students for life, not exams alone. It must give people the understanding, skills and values they need to cooperate in resolving the interconnected challenges of the 21st Century."

Dan Rather's Interview with Linda Darling-Hammond on Finland
In just 30 years, Finland transformed its school system from one that was mediocre and inequitable, to one that consistently produces some of the world's best students, while virtually eliminating an achievement gap. And they do it without standardized testing.
This interview with Linda-Darling Hammond, Charles E. Ducommun Professor of Education at Stanford University, is excerpted from Dan Rather Reports' show on Finland's education system, Finnish First. Part One looks inside Finnish schools to examine the practices behind the so-called "Finnish miracle." Part Two asks, What can the United States learn from Finland's success?
